Degree Requirements: Must be on track for a 2.1 (or above) in 2.1 (or above) in an iMechE accredited undergraduate degree.

 

You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree, but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You will be expected to provide evidence from your university to show you will be an undergraduate student for the duration of the placement year.

 

Locations: Barnard Castle, Maidenhead, Ware, Worthing (penicillin site)

 

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

 

Detailed Description of the role:

 

A Mechanical Engineering placement in one of our manufacturing sites will give you hands on practical application of the theory from university.  Our sites produce a huge mix of different products, from tablets and inhalers to toothpaste and mouthwash.

 

During your 12 months with us, you’ll gain experience in areas such as:

  • Continuous improvement activities to ensure good manufacturing practice
  • Safety and/or quality risk assessments
  • Plant commissioning/design (change management and validation)
  • Mechanical design of systems to problem solve
  • Project management and planning
  • Leading root cause analysis investigations
  • Installation and maintenance practices
  • A range of consumer and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and equipment depending on the site, such as active ingredient manufacturing, granulation, compression, filling, assembly and packaging.

Whichever role you go into you will be applying the skills you already have and developing new skills such as; team working, effective communication and time management.

 

You will work with and learn from an experienced team of multi-discipline engineers, technicians, and operators; they will coach and mentor you during your year to help you achieve your potential.

Details of role at each site:

 

Barnard Castle - Working within the Operations or Project Engineering teams you will be focussing either on improving equipment reliability and production performance and / or delivering a range of new manufacturing, packaging & utilities equipment.

Role 1: This role will be to work as part of the capital engineering project team. You will be instrumental in the delivery of new equipment across this diverse New Product Introduction (NPI) Site working within cross functional teams. You will see the full project lifecycle from the specification, delivery, installation and validation of the equipment through to its commercial use. You will consider safety, quality and commercial aspects throughout your assignment in this key area for the Sites future.

Role 2 (Reliability Engineer): The successful candidate will integrate into the Reliability Engineering team and be expected to deliver a business improvement project focused on the Site Maintenance strategy. In addition to this the opportunities will arise to support day to day operations working in a safe and compliant manner. Exposure to this high volume and fast paced environment will build a great understanding of Reliability techniques such as Equipment Criticality Assessments, Failure Mode Effects Analysis and Reliability Centred Maintenance. Development of maintenance routines, standard work instructions and digitalisation of data analysis.

 

Maidenhead – This role will be working in toothpaste and mouthwash processing with Engineering. It will focus on improving reliability through design, process development and maintenance improvements. It will involve cross functional working, innovative approaches through to managing change. The role is key to drive quality, safety and cost improvements. At Maidenhead the IP will be a key team member representing Engineering at operations daily meetings managing day to day issues, integral to problem solving, working on CAPEX and CI projects.

 

Worthing – In Worthing, you will be focussing on improvement activities (such as changeover time reduction, safety and efficiency improvements) and other projects as well as supporting operational elements within one of our Engineering departments on site. You will be given the opportunity to learn and develop in the area you are working and will be a key member of our dynamic Engineering teams.

 

Ware – You will be focussing on improvement activities and projects as well as supporting operational elements within one of four Engineering departments on site. You will be given the opportunity to learn and develop in the area you are working and will be a key member of our dynamic Engineering. Roles available:

  • Role 1:
    • Work within the RSC Assembly Engineering team that supports the manufacture and assembly of Ellipta Inhaler Pharmaceutical Products.
    • Integrate into the RSC Assembly Engineering team and be expected to deliver a business or compliance improvement project. In addition to this, opportunities will arise to support day to day operations, working in a safe and compliant manner. Exposure to this high volume and fast paced environment will build a great understanding of the pharmaceutical manufacturing workplace. 
    • At the end of the placement, the student will be expected to collate a summary of their work and present this to the business to provide a range of recommendations.

  • Role 2: 
    • An opportunity exists for a candidate with a strong engineering background to work alongside the Ellipta Packing Engineering and Production functions that support the manufacture and packing of a range of pharmaceutical products.
    • The successful candidate will integrate into the Engineering team and be expected to deliver a business or compliance improvement project. In addition to this, opportunities will arise to support day to day operations, working in a safe and compliant manner. Exposure to this high volume and fast paced environment will build a great understanding of Manufacturing and Engineering activities.
    • The site offers Chartered Engineers to mentor and develop placement students in both IMechE and IChemE.

  • Role 3:
    • An opportunity exists for a candidate with a strong Engineering background to work in the Engineering Technical Services (ETS) department. The ETS team manage site critical services, including Purified Water plants, GMP HVAC, Conveyor systems and Dust Extract systems. ETS are present on site 24/7 a week, 365 days a year.
    • The successful candidate will integrate into the ETS team at an Engineer level and will be expected to deliver business or compliance improvement projects. In addition to this, opportunities will arise to support day to day operations, working in a safe and compliant manner. Exposure to this high volume and fast paced environment will build a great understanding of pharmaceutical manufacturing and compliance activities.

  • Role 4: (Over 21s only)
    • Complete assigned projects focus on Engineering Reliability and Continuous Improvement.
    • Provide day by day engineering support to production and New Product Introduction activities
    • Provide technical support to equipment maintenance, capital projects and root cause investigations.

Additional Details: The Assessment Centre for successful applicants is expected to take place in:

  • Barnard Castle in mid-November 2019
  • Maidenhead in the week of 26th November 2019
  • Ware from mid-November to mid-December 2019
  • Worthing from mid-November to mid-December 2019
